From my experience, loss is not just an ending but a beginning. It creates a space where something new can grow, even if that growth is slow and uncertain. My art reflects this cycle of destruction and creation. It shows how silence and stillness can be powerful, not empty.

A Turning Point in My Life
Starting to paint again in 2015 marked a significant turning point in my life. Over the past 11 years, I have faced three major losses. Each loss reshaped not only my personal world but also my creative path. These experiences have deeply influenced my work, which often explores themes of loss, renewal, and the profound changes that follow.
This post shares part of that process — of finding an authentic voice in art through disruption and learning to trust what emerged from it.
The Challenge of Staying True to Myself
Returning to painting after years away was both exciting and daunting. I wanted my work to reflect my truth. Yet, I found myself constantly questioning every piece. The presence of the online art world made this harder. It’s easy to feel obsolete or that your voice doesn’t matter when you scroll through countless images of other artists’ work.
I often wondered if what I had to say was valuable. Was my way of expressing it wrong or simply ignored? This comparison trap slowed my progress and made me doubt my creative instincts. I realised that the online world, while full of inspiration, can also become a source of distraction and self-doubt. To move forward, I had to return to my own experience and trust the process of making as something quieter and more private.
Art as a Confession of Process and Experience
I don’t want to share my experiences directly or explicitly. Instead, I want my work to reveal something of that journey. Loss is devastating, but it also uncovers hidden parts of ourselves. It teaches us about who we are and who we are becoming.
My paintings have become a way to express this transformation without needing to explain it. Each piece carries a sense of stillness and silence that I now recognise as central to my work. This quietness reflects the space left by loss — the pause before something begins to take shape again. Within that space, contrasts emerge: between what was and what is becoming. This tension is where my work now sits.
The Role of Introspection and Slow Alchemy
I am naturally introspective, and painting has become a slow alchemy for me. It’s a process of turning raw experience into something more distilled and tangible. This transformation doesn’t happen quickly or easily. It requires patience and a willingness to sit with uncertainty.
One painting, for example, took months to complete. I returned to it repeatedly — layering and removing, adjusting and reworking it. The final piece wasn’t just a visual object; it was a record of that process.
Over time, this way of working has shaped a clearer direction in my practice. I now create symbolic, figurative paintings that explore stillness, nature, and what remains after change.
What I’ve Learned About Loss and Renewal
From my experience, loss is not only an ending but also the beginning of something less defined. It creates a space where something new can grow, even if that growth is slow and uncertain. My work reflects this cycle — not as something resolved, but as something ongoing. It holds moments of stillness, tension, and quiet transformation.
Rather than explaining these experiences directly, the paintings offer a place to sit with them. This is the work I continue to develop — a slower, more intentional practice shaped by experience and grounded in stillness.
Embracing the Journey of Creation
As I reflect on my artistic journey, I find beauty in the process itself. Each brushstroke is a testament to my growth. I embrace the uncertainty that comes with creation. It is in this uncertainty that I discover new depths within myself. The act of painting becomes a conversation with my inner self, a dialogue that unfolds over time.
In this space, I invite contemplation. I encourage viewers to pause, to breathe, and to engage with the artwork on a personal level. Each piece serves as a mirror, reflecting not just my journey but also the viewer's own experiences of loss and renewal.
The Intersection of Art and Healing
Art has a unique ability to heal. It allows us to process emotions that words often fail to capture. Through my paintings, I explore the intersection of art and healing. I believe that by sharing my journey, I can create a space for others to reflect on their own experiences.
In this way, my art becomes a shared experience. It invites viewers to connect with their own stories of loss and renewal. I hope that my work resonates with those who seek solace and understanding in the complexities of life.
The Future of My Artistic Practice
Looking ahead, I am excited about the possibilities that lie before me. I am committed to continuing this journey of exploration and expression. Each new piece will be an invitation to delve deeper into the themes that resonate with me.
I envision a future where my art continues to evolve, where I can experiment with new techniques and ideas. I want to push the boundaries of my creative practice while remaining true to the essence of my experiences.
As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons learned from loss and renewal. I embrace the quiet moments, the stillness that allows for reflection and growth. This journey is ongoing, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share it through my art.
Conclusion: A Journey of Transformation
In conclusion, my artistic journey is one of transformation. It is a path marked by loss, renewal, and the quiet strength found in stillness. Each painting is a reflection of this journey, a testament to the beauty that can emerge from the depths of despair.
I invite you to join me in this exploration. Let us embrace the complexities of life together. Through art, we can find connection, understanding, and ultimately, healing.
